Remote Learning Experience
HOW I ADJUSTED TO ONLINE LEARNING

This quote not only makes me laugh, but reminds me of my experience with RLE.
I was student teaching when the COVID-19 pandemic was called into effect and Gov. Mike DeWine declared the shut down of all K-12 schools. My first thought was to panic. I was a student teacher and I have had barely three months of experience. I was just starting to get fully comfortable with my routines and now someone is telling me that I have to learn this whole new way of teaching. In that moment, life hit me in the head with a brick.

However, I didn't panic (longer than one night of course). I took a breath and decided to just think it out before reacting in a way I might regret. I was going to roll with the punches. All my life, I had been told by my older brother, my professors, my friends, and now my mentor teacher to not 'sweat the small stuff'. Why freak out over the uncontrollable thing that is life. Take a breath. Have some faith.

So I decided to do just that. I took things step by step. I conquered one thing at a time. I adjusted to remote learning.

However, my story doesn't stop there.

Through my RLE experience I learned the following:
- Time management like no other
- High Schoolers actually get bored after being on their phones for hours on end
- Adapting is necessary, not optional
- There are a million ways to hold a video conference with students
- High Schools support you in ways you can never thank enough
- Checking in on students is never not an option
- Teachers are superheroes
- Communication never stops... ever
- Making instructional videos is actually fun
- Organization mastery
- My students are amazing day in and day out
- I have so much support in this world
- Crazy times doesn't mean crazy learning
- ALWAYS take a breath before doing/saying something
- I miss my students

This lesson was used during my student teaching Remote Learning Experience. During a columnist unit, I used this lesson to virtually engage the students with the structure of column writing.
This lesson used choice for the students as they were allowed to choose from four different texts based on their interests and likes. Their choice of text guided their learning and allowed for even more engagement in an environment that was very new and distracting to them.

This lesson allowed me to see how brilliant and engaged my students are even when they are going through a confusing and difficult time. This RLE lesson allowed for me to properly check-in on them, communicate through response to discussion questions, and engage them in interesting and diverse texts - all while learning and meeting standards and objectives!
